If you see the "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device" message when starting your CLX PC, the system is having trouble finding the drive that contains Windows.
This can happen if the storage drive is not properly connected, the system is no longer detecting the drive, or there is an issue with Windows. If the PC has been in use for some time, the storage drive may also have developed a hardware failure.
Check the Main Storage Drive
One of the first things to check is whether your main storage drive is properly connected.
- Shut down the PC completely.
- Disconnect the power cable from the back of the PC.
- Remove the glass side panel to access the internal components.
-
Locate the M.2 SSD installed on the motherboard. An M.2 SSD is a small storage drive that is installed directly into the motherboard and is approximately the size of a stick of gum.
- Depending on your system, the M.2 drive may be located underneath the graphics card or underneath one of the motherboard's heatsinks or covers.
If you cannot locate the M.2 drive, we recommend contacting CLX Support rather than removing other components.
Reseat the M.2 SSD
If you are comfortable working inside your PC, you can reseat the M.2 SSD to make sure it is properly connected.
- Locate the small screw securing the M.2 SSD to the motherboard.
- Remove the screw.
- The SSD should lift slightly once the screw is removed.
- Carefully pull the SSD straight out of the M.2 slot.
- Reinsert the SSD into the slot at the same angle.
- Once it is fully inserted, press the SSD down toward the motherboard.
- Reinstall the screw to secure the SSD.
For a visual demonstration, see this video showing how to remove and install an M.2 SSD.
Do not force the SSD into or out of the slot. If you are unsure about any part of the process, contact CLX Support for assistance.
Test the PC
After reseating the SSD:
- Reconnect the power cable.
- Turn the PC on.
- Check whether Windows starts normally.
If Windows Starts
If the PC starts normally, the issue may have been caused by the SSD not making proper contact with the motherboard.
If the Error Continues
If you still receive the "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device" message, the system may not be detecting the storage drive correctly, or there may be an issue with Windows or the drive itself.
At this point, contact CLX Support before attempting additional troubleshooting. Depending on the results of our diagnostics, we may recommend repairing or reinstalling Windows or replacing the storage drive.
Contact CLX Support
If reseating the M.2 SSD does not resolve the issue, contact CLX Support.
Please have your CLX serial number available so we can identify your system configuration and help determine the appropriate next steps.
Important: If you have important files stored on the affected drive, let our support team know before attempting to reinstall Windows. A Windows reinstallation can potentially remove data from the drive.
